LANZAROTE

A 5 day passage from Gibralter to Lanzarote gave us a good downwind sail. This enabled us to use twin head sails poled out on the Twistle rig. With Ferdy (Hydrovane) steering this gave us a comfortable hands off passage for most of the way. There was an interesting contact with an American warship one night who appeared to be on a collision course with us. We approached Lanzarote in the early hours of the morning and had to cross the bows of the QE2. Puerto Calero marina is very smart (note the brass bollards). Lanzarote is very arid and volcanic but fascinating. It is so different from Tenerife. There are hundreds of volcanos on the island and the plant life is very interesting but sparse. We undertook a 15K walk along the coast and up a baranca to a white mountain village. The views were stunning.
